UNIFIL Replacement Faces Delays… Israel and Hezbollah Act Freely In South Lebanon

Unifil’s mandate ends on December 31, with its withdrawal set to begin in early 2027. Yet talks on a replacement are stalling, with no clear agreement on its role, powers or participating countries.

Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee discussed the issue with Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi amid fears of a security and monitoring gap. Lebanon is seeking to maintain an international presence and support for the army, but time is running out.

UNIFIL’s departure could weaken the UN’s ability to monitor violations, document attacks and report to the Security Council. It could also remove key communication channels that help ease tensions and prevent small incidents from becoming wider clashes.

Israeli attacks and occupation continue, while Hezbollah’s military preparations raise fears of renewed fighting. As international troops prepare to leave, residents face greater risks, paying the price of military and political decisions with their safety, homes and lives.
