We put off expressing so many of our feelings because we think there is still time. We grow used to people’s presence and leave kind words, care, and apologies for another day.
Then comes their absence. Photos become more present, words come more easily, and we realize how much we could have said while they were still here to hear it.
Perhaps the cruelest thing about death is how it reveals the value of a presence we had long taken for granted.
