Hezbollah has been exceptionally quick to issue denials, most recently after Syrian authorities announced the arrest of a cell in the Yarmouk Basin in Daraa, alleging ties to the group. Hezbollah swiftly denied any connection to those arrested or any military or security presence in #Syria.
Record speed in responding to accusations abroad, and exceptional clarity in stating its position. We wish that urgency would extend to domestic issues in #Lebanon: handing over weapons, placing decisions on war and peace solely in the state’s hands, and respecting its institutions. These matters have dragged through nearly four decades of debate and delay, while a denial is ready within hours.
The irony is that Hezbollah finds time to respond to Syria, Kuwait and the UAE, yet still needs more time to resolve issues affecting an entire country’s future, security and economy. It seems only its media relations team operates in emergency mode. Decisions whose delays cost Lebanese people dearly apparently have all the time in the world. If that speed reached the dialogue table, perhaps the weapons issue would be settled before the next denial.
