Turkey raids rights groups and arrests LGBTQ+ advocates

Turkish authorities have raided the offices of organizations defending LGBTQ+ rights and detained activists and community members as part of a security campaign called “My Family Is Safe.” The campaign has also targeted rights advocates and journalists, while some online accounts have been blocked.

“Protecting the family” as a cover for a security crackdown

Under the banner of “My Family Is Safe,” authorities are carrying out raids and arrests targeting activists and LGBTQ+ individuals. Rights groups accuse the government of using the protection of children and families to justify persecution.

The crackdown goes beyond arrests

The targeting of organizations, blocking of accounts, and pressure on journalists and rights advocates are also restricting the community’s ability to organize, speak out, and defend its rights.

Arrests have also extended to people demonstrating against the campaign, widening the crackdown from LGBTQ+ individuals themselves to those demanding their protection.

The protests are going international
Demonstrations are planned on Friday outside Turkish embassies in several capitals, calling for the release of detainees and an end to the campaign amid growing concern that anti-LGBTQ+ repression is being institutionalized under the language of “family protection.”
