Tripoli Drowns in Waste… Akkar Bears The Cost of The Solution

The waste crisis in Tripoli is worsening as the city’s landfill reaches capacity. Tripoli and the other municipalities in the Al-Fayhaa union generate more than 400 tonnes of waste daily, and disrupted collections have left rubbish piling up in the streets.

A proposal to send Tripoli’s waste to the #Srar dumpsite in #Akkar has faced widespread opposition, with protests to block trucks and calls to spare the region an additional waste burden.

Srar is already undergoing a transition in waste management, with a sanitary landfill and treatment plant expected to open in the coming months, further complicating the proposed transfers.

Meanwhile, Tripoli has temporarily resumed using its full landfill while awaiting a long-term solution based on sorting and treatment to reduce the volume sent for burial.

The city needs a sustainable solution—one that does not simply shift the crisis from one region to another.
