Syria has officially been removed from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism after 47 years. The decision took effect after Congress’s 45-day review period ended on August 24.
The move removes a major obstacle to Syria’s return to the global economy, easing restrictions on aid, financial transactions, and investment. Damascus hopes it will restore access to international banking and attract reconstruction funding.
Washington linked the decision to steps taken by Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government to distance itself from terrorist groups and cooperate against them. The U.S. also lifted Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s remaining terrorist designation.
After decades of isolation, Syria now faces the challenge of turning international openness into investment, reconstruction, and economic growth.
