According to a survey conducted by International Information, a significant portion of Lebanese people support peace with Israel. While the reasons behind support or opposition may vary, supporters largely seem to agree on one thing: Lebanon is exhausted from repeated and ongoing wars, bloodshed, and the constant smell of death, to the point where people have forgotten what peace and comfort feel like. Today, the country appears desperate for peace simply to find some relief.
As for the Shiite community, where the majority still rejects peace, this position can, in some ways, be understood. Between them and Israel lies a history of victims, blood, and destroyed homes. Yet it has also become clear that Israel will not stop causing destruction, bloodshed, and civilian casualties without reaching an agreement with Lebanon. It has likewise become evident that Lebanon is not capable of confronting Israel militarily. The question therefore remains: how long can this rejection continue?
