Srar landfill for northern waste shifting the crisis to Akkar

Each time, the state shifts Lebanon’s waste crisis from one area to another instead of addressing its root causes.

Today, Srar landfill in Akkar is being considered as a destination for waste from Tripoli and other northern areas, as Tripoli’s landfill nears full capacity. Yet Srar reportedly lacks the required legal and environmental standards, amid ongoing complaints over toxic leachate seeping into soil and groundwater, as well as waste burning at the site.

It is the same pattern Lebanon has seen since the 2015 waste crisis: whenever one landfill fills up, the state looks for another place to dump the problem instead of building a serious system for sorting, treatment, and sanitary disposal.

More than a decade later, the policy remains the same—move the crisis elsewhere, while people’s health, water, and land remain at the bottom of the priority list.
