Lebanon’s Parliament has passed the General Amnesty law after years of debate, bringing an end to legal cases and detentions that, in some instances, have dragged on for years. The law defines which crimes are covered and excluded and reduces certain sentences, while the issue of Islamist detainees remained at the heart of the dispute leading up to its passage.
Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement objected to the law and walked out of the session, citing the decision to prevent the defense minister from expressing his position.
