Maricarmen Abascal Died After Losing Her Home Sparking Protests In Spain

Maricarmen Abascal, 87, died two weeks after being evicted from her Madrid home of 70 years, sparking outrage over Spain’s housing crisis.

A property company sought to raise her monthly rent from €500 to €2,650, far beyond her €1,400 pension. She was carried out on a medical stretcher on September 23, despite neighbours’ and activists’ efforts to stop the eviction.

An agreement later allowed her to return at close to her previous rent, but she died in hospital on October 7 before she could go home.
