Lebanon launches railway project connecting Beirut to the Bekaa

The government has officially launched a study for a railway project connecting Beirut to the Bekaa, linking the Port of Beirut to the Bekaa Valley and the Masnaa border crossing, with possible future extension to Syria.

The project includes plans for a dry port in the Bekaa, allowing goods to be stored, processed, and distributed closer to Lebanon’s agricultural and industrial heartland.

The proposed railway aims to ease freight movement, reduce road congestion, lower transport costs, create jobs, and strengthen Lebanon’s role as a regional trade gateway.

It could also be linked in the future to the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor.
