Some residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs say they received generator bills for homes that have already been destroyed—another form of exploitation even after losing everything.
These are not merely vacant apartments. In many damaged buildings, electricity has been cut off, while meters, wiring, and subscription equipment have been damaged or destroyed. Yet residents are still being asked to pay for a service they neither used nor received.
The bills add another burden to families already paying for displacement and alternative housing after losing their homes and belongings.
These cases raise questions about oversight of generator operators and the fees they can legally collect. When the home no longer exists, the meter no longer works, and the service cannot be delivered, what exactly are residents being charged for?
