Ghaem Hosseini executed for opposing the regime

Iranian authorities executed 21-year-old Ghaem Hosseini on Thursday over his participation in January’s protests in Isfahan. Tehran described him as a “foreigner” but has not disclosed his nationality.

Hosseini was among several young men collectively tried and sentenced to death over the protests. Rights groups raised concerns about fair trial violations and urged Iran to halt the executions.

Iran continues to use executions to suppress dissent, turning the judiciary into an extension of its crackdown. Other defendants in the same case remain at risk of execution.
