Security forces arrested the operator of an illegal fishing net off Beirut’s Summerland coast after footage showed large numbers of juvenile fish caught and left dead at sea and onshore.
The case began Saturday when the environmental group Terre Liban received a documented complaint about the use of a beach seine net. It alerted security forces, who stopped the operator for questioning.
The net’s narrow openings trap fish before they mature and reproduce, threatening marine life and fish stocks. Nearby resort workers later removed the dead fish from the beach.
The arrest comes amid a wider investigation into fish deaths along Lebanon’s coast. The Agriculture Ministry has cited illegal fishing, rising water temperatures, and low oxygen levels as possible causes.
This time, the footage did not end with a social media post—it led to a complaint and an arrest.
