Danniyeh’s ancient junipers fall victim to vested interests

The highlands of Danniyeh are facing yet another environmental assault. Road construction in one of the area’s most fragile mountain zones has uprooted and buried ancient juniper trees, adding to Lebanon’s long record of attacks on nature.

Years of weak oversight and absent accountability have made forests easy targets for private interests. With every violation, Lebanon loses natural heritage that may take decades to restore—if restoration is even possible.

Once again, the Ministry of Environment, field monitoring, and swift legal action are nowhere to be seen.
