As part of an ongoing phase of internal reviews and investigations in Syria into corruption files and abuses committed within the security apparatus during the Assad era, Syrian security forces have arrested Major General Ali Younes, head of Branch 293 responsible for officers’ affairs within the Syrian Intelligence Directorate.
The arrest comes within the framework of investigations into alleged financial corruption and security-related violations suspected to have been committed during his years of service within the former regime’s security establishment.
Younes had previously served as Deputy Head of Military Intelligence and also chaired the security committee in the governorate of Homs until 2013 — a period marked by major security and military developments in the province.
