Water is flowing again along around 5 kilometres of the Litani River near Lake Qaraoun, following cleaning and restoration work by the Litani River Authority around Saghbine.
The work included removing buildup and obstacles blocking the flow, as well as artificial barriers used to collect polluted water for illegal irrigation.
This is an important environmental and public health step for an area that has long suffered from water pollution, foul smells and encroachments on the river.
The work marks progress in addressing longstanding problems. Continued monitoring of pollution sources and prevention of further encroachments will be needed to protect the river and Lake Qaraoun in the long term.
