The Pentagon announced that former U.S. Army officer Nidal Hasan, of Palestinian descent, will be executed by firing squad on December 3, with the execution broadcast live to the public.
Hasan, an Army psychiatrist and major, killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009. During his trial, he said he opposed U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and wanted to stop soldiers from fighting Muslims.
A military court sentenced him to death in 2013 for murder and attempted murder. If carried out as announced, it would be the first U.S. military execution by firing squad since World War II.
The planned live broadcast has sparked debate over making executions a public spectacle and raised legal and human rights concerns.
