The renewed circulation of claims attributed to Israeli media about military facilities in Srifa has brought renewed attention to a previous interview with Ali Barro, in which he spoke of facilities in the town and other southern villages, describing them as more significant than the Ali al-Taher facility.
Following the interview, media outlets circulated information attributed to the Israeli side about massive underground facilities in Srifa. The municipality condemned the town’s inclusion in unsubstantiated claims and threatened legal action against those promoting them. However, there is no evidence that the Israeli narrative was based on Barro’s remarks.
The danger of such media displays of power lies in turning an inhabited town into the subject of speculation about alleged military facilities. Words spoken before cameras can heighten residents’ fears and expose families and children to further threats, even though they already bear the cost of war through the loss of their security, homes, and lives.
This incident highlights the need to hold media professionals accountable for verifying information and assessing the consequences of publishing it. The people of Srifa are not material for displays of power, and their safety cannot withstand further rhetoric that gives military claims wider circulation.
