Iran sentences young woman to death tortures her twin over protests

For months, an Iranian mother searched for her twin daughters, Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, after they were arrested during protests in Isfahan in January 2026. She searched hospitals, courts, and prisons before finally being allowed to see them at Dowlatabad Prison.

She found them with swollen faces and injuries. Their family says they were physically and psychologically tortured, and that interrogators threatened to sexually assault Romina in front of Taraneh to force her to sign confessions.

The sisters were charged in connection with the deaths of a Revolutionary Guard member and another person during the protests. Taraneh was sentenced to death for “waging war against God,” while Romina received a lengthy prison sentence, despite their family’s insistence that no evidence links them to violence.

Taraneh now struggles to walk because of her injuries. Her family says Iranian authorities refused to hospitalize her despite a prison doctor’s recommendation for urgent examinations.

The sisters remain behind bars as their mother continues to demand justice and fight to save their lives.
