Sixth grade students are 4.5 years behind in reading

A 2026 report by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, titled The Lost Generation, highlights a widening education gap in Lebanon.

More than 80% of students assessed were unable to master basic division in mathematics. In reading, sixth-grade students may be performing as much as four and a half years below the expected level.
The war disrupted the education of more than 250,000 students

At the height of the war, around half of Lebanon’s public schools were turned into shelters. This came after years of school closures, teacher strikes, and economic collapse, further deepening learning losses.

Years of interrupted education have left many children without basic reading and numeracy skills. Closing that gap will require targeted learning programs, stronger support for teachers, and a more stable school year.
