In Syria 2.7 million children are out of school awaiting school reconstruction

Millions of children in Syria are entering the reconstruction phase outside the classroom, as years of war have left one of their heaviest legacies on education.

Around 2.7 million children are out of school, while nearly 8,000 schools remain unusable due to destruction or damage. The return of Syrians to their communities is placing further pressure on already overcrowded schools.

Rebuilding classrooms alone is not enough. Poverty, transportation costs, teacher shortages, limited learning materials, and unexploded remnants of war continue to keep children away from education.

In 2025, UNICEF-supported programs reached around 3.7 million children, rehabilitated dozens of schools, distributed nearly two million textbooks, and provided remedial and non-formal education. Yet millions remain outside the school system.

As roads, electricity, construction, and investment dominate Syria’s reconstruction agenda, education remains less visible but no less urgent.

Rebuilding Syria means reopening its schools and returning millions of children to the classroom before years of war become a lost future for an entire generation.
