Lebanon arrests major general Adel Issa a key Assad remnant at the Syrian embassy

Lebanese authorities arrested retired Syrian Major General Adel Issa, the former commander of Division 17 under Bashar al-Assad, after he went to the Syrian Embassy in Beirut to complete an administrative procedure. The arrest was based on an in absentia warrant issued by the Syrian judiciary.

Syrian authorities are pursuing Issa on charges of murder and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during his military service. He has been placed in the custody of the Lebanese judiciary, which requested the full case file, supporting documents, and evidence before deciding on his fate and any possible extradition to Syria.

Issa held senior military positions during the war, most notably as commander of Division 17 in Raqqa. His name was also linked to the fall of the division’s headquarters and Tabqa airbase to ISIS in 2014, amid accusations that he withdrew and left hundreds of soldiers behind. He was later appointed commander of ground forces in Deir ez-Zor in 2015.

His arrest signals growing Lebanese judicial action against former military and security figures from the Assad regime currently in Lebanon, as arrest warrants and extradition requests open the way for individual cases to be reviewed by the courts.
