More than six decades after it last ran, having ceased operations in 1965, the tram is preparing to return to the streets of Beirut. On August 15, the first field trial of LIRA X-TRAM will launch from downtown Beirut. It is the first smart electric tram to be manufactured in Lebanon and the Arab world, operating without railway tracks or the need for dedicated infrastructure. The official launch date will be announced at a later stage.
LIRA X-TRAM is a national project designed to provide a modern, sustainable solution to Lebanon’s public transportation crisis. By relying on smart electric transport technology that runs on existing roads, it could significantly reduce the cost of building conventional transit networks while allowing for greater flexibility in implementation.
The project could restore hope for easing Beirut’s worsening transportation challenges and pave the way for additional, more strategic tram lines across the country.
