Berri’s absence from Howayek’s beatification is an old story

Years ago, Nabih Berri invoked the Howayek family name in an interview, using the phrase “Howayek and Zwayek” to mock what he described as political dynasties.

Today, the Speaker of Parliament was absent from the beatification of Patriarch Elias Howayek, one of the leading founders of Greater Lebanon, while the President, Prime Minister, and many political and religious leaders attended.

Political disagreements aside, the heads of Lebanon’s constitutional institutions are expected to be present at national occasions that honor figures central to the country’s history not among the most notable absentees.
