In a move showing that some of Lebanon’s seemingly “unsolvable” crises can be addressed through simple initiatives, the Al-Sarraj neighborhood in Bebnine, Akkar, installed its first solar-powered lighting system. The project was funded through proceeds from recyclable materials collected by residents, mainly plastic and metal.
The initiative offers a practical model for turning waste into a community resource by financing a sustainable project that improves infrastructure and helps protect the environment. It also brings together solutions to two major challenges: the electricity crisis and waste management, both of which affect not only Akkar but Lebanon as a whole.
Building on this experience, expanding the initiative to other Lebanese regions could be highly beneficial. It may not fully solve either crisis, but it could at least help reduce their impact.
