Nabih Berri advised Nawaf Salam against referring the explosives seized in Dahr al-Baydar to the Judicial Council, despite Hezbollah claiming ownership and demanding their return.

His position reflects a familiar approach in Lebanon: settling sensitive cases through political deals and protecting allies. But nearly half a tonne of explosives cannot be treated as a disagreement between leaders.

Decisions to bring all weapons under state control mean little if enforcing them requires political approval. Investigators must establish the shipment’s source, destination, purpose and those responsible.

Whether or not the case reaches the Judicial Council, the investigation must continue without interference. No leader or party should decide who faces justice.
