Following the city of Tyre, the Ministry of Culture announced that five castles in Jabal Amel—Beaufort, Tebnine, Chamaa, Deir Kifa, and Doubieh in Shaqra—have been placed on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger.

The decision follows the damage and threats these historic sites faced during the latest war in southern Lebanon.

Over the years, the wars between Israel and Hezbollah have caused human and structural losses, while also endangering sites that preserve centuries of history and heritage.

With every round of fighting, archaeological landmarks face destruction or damage, threatening part of Lebanon’s cultural memory and making their protection a responsibility that extends beyond the state to the international community
